Interpretations from Philippine Vernacular Architecture

Interpretations from Philippine Vernacular Architecture

Vernacular Architecture is considered as the simple form of architecture that covers all of the human needs according to their culture. This type of architecture specifies the concept of design that is based on using the utilized building and construction material in native architecture.

Philippine Vernacular The bahay kubo and bahay na bato employ traditional post and lintel construction/ platform framing. As noted above, the pre-Hispanic bahay kubo utilizes building materials that are abundant and immediately available (e.g. timber, bamboo, palm fronds and grass), creating a light structure suited to the tropics. The simple construction and use of local materials facilitate the dwelling’s easy reconstruction and/or repair following earthquakes, typhoons or floods.

The Facade

In order to attain the Philippine Vernacular Architecture style with respect to Bahay kubo and Bahay na Bato. The Resthouse uses local materials specifically in Bamboo since the site was dominant in the said materials.

The bamboo material is applied as a column with concrete pedestal for the eaves since the eaves are designed as wide enough as part of the design concept. Also the said materials is applied as brackets for the first floor roof eaves.

Interior Aspect:

The challenge of interior design under interior architecture is paramount since its concept of “interiority” in architecture education in this country is yet to be concretely defined and clearly distinct from the tradition of interior studies and practices. In general, interior architecture is concerned with interior design of the buildings, of which the structure and construction will determine how the interior will creatively be shaped.

The concept of interior architecture in fact has been traditionally applied in vernacular buildings. At present the traditional interior designs are mostly concerned with architecture buildings in the urban setting. Meanwhile the vernacular buildings in the rural setting have not been recognized as potential sources to elaborate the interior studies and practices across architectural types (classic, modern, traditional).

Although the interior ambience of vernacular buildings and their materiality are often adopted into modern buildings to represent local content in design, unfortunately the “spatial” significance, in terms of their symbolic meanings and spatial language are removed from them particularly. As architecture can be understood through its symbolic features as a communication system, so does the interior of vernacular buildings can be studied through understanding the spatial language.

The Living Area

Floor and ceiling are wood materials available in the site, in terms of the wall it emphasizes the rawness of materials which is concrete yet designed as its natural look. Also the texture of the wall creates an additional ambience of Resthouse.

The Dining Area

Likewise with the Living Area, composed of wood floor and ceiling and rough wall, the fixtures only matter. But still part of the design concept, as much as possible the lighting fixtures are limited and it is in pinlight design to create minimalist ceiling to give emphasize of wood materials that are being used.

The Kitchen Area

Kitchen is in a wood countertop nook likewise with the chair. Main kitchen incorporates black stone wall with cove lighting to provide a natural look and highlights the fixtures being used. Apart from it, the main idea is to provide a spacious area with a large floor to ceiling sliding window framed with yakal wood, this is to give view from the patio and pool.
