The Philippines is composed of diverse culture. One of it is the Islamic culture that could be said as one of the pioneers in the making of the Philippine culture.
Architecturally, Islamic architecture in the Philippines is dominantly present in Mosques only. Islamic architecture in residentials is seldomly seen. This residential house was designed to accommodate a Muslim family.
This residential house incorporated arches in design which screams Islamic. Arches are one of the distinctive features of Islamic architecture. Although this style has been altered in different countries and continents, certain features such as the arches remain. These arches could especially be observed in mosques.
In this residential house, Ogee type arches were integrated in the design. Ogee arches are like the pointed arches, where the point is composed of two S-shaped lines.
Aside from the integration of the arches in the exterior, the interior of the house was not neglected. Arches were present in the living and dining areas. Simply just from the exterior of the house, it already screams Islamic architecture. Upon entering, you’d know that Muslims are the owner of the place and if not, they’re probably a huge fan of Islamic architecture.
The second floor, of course, would not be absent of the ogee arches. The end of the hallway of the second floor was decorated with the arches. A long custom table was placed. It might be comparable to a niche or an altar, depending on what is placed there.
For a 100 sqm lot, a room for praying was dedicated. The qibla wall, the direction where mecca is located and where they face when praying is decorated with an arch. In mosques, it is the qibla wall that stands out the most. The prayer room is painted with white to invoke peace and serenity.
