Mid-Century Modern Architecture

Mid-Century Modern Architecture

Mid-century modern refers to the twentieth century, notably the years immediately following World War II, from the mid-1940s to the late 1960s. North America had a thriving economy and a booming population at the time.

As a result of the large number of young families purchasing and equipping their first houses, suburbs grew with freshly built homes that mirrored modern construction techniques.

Exterior Perspective

Builders and designers experimented with form and materials to fulfil the desires of new home owners. Because new dwellings were typically modest, space had to be utilized carefully and efficiently. Designers like Charles and Ray Eames, Arne Jacobsen, George Nelson, and Harry Bertoia developed distinctive furniture and lighting that can still be found today.

Living Area

Mid-Century modern is understated

People wanted to put the war years behind them, and they embraced the new and modern. Gone were the overstuffed, overfilled rooms they grew up in, replaced by decor with clean lines and minimal fuss.

Dining area

The shapes are both organic and geometric.

Houses with plenty of windows let the outside in, and organic and geometric patterns in mid-century modern style mirrored this. Wood, copper, and leather, among other natural materials, were in high demand. Bold patterns drew attention to slim, uncluttered spaces

Kitchen

Functionality is paramount

Every area in the house was created with a specific purpose in mind, and anything extraneous was left out. Because it saved space, multipurpose furniture was in high demand. Stack, fold, or nest popular pieces.
