Modernism is a worldwide architectural and design style that began in the 1920s as a response to rapid industrialization and social change. Modernism used new materials and improved technology to pursue order and universals in architecture, while rejecting old, traditional, historical ideas and forms, as well as ornamentation.
Modernism became the single most important new style or philosophy of architecture and design of the twentieth century, rejecting ornament and embracing minimalism. It was linked to an analytical approach to architectural function, stringent logical use of (often new) materials, structural innovation, and the removal of ornament. After an exhibition of modernist architecture in America by the architect Philip Johnson in 1932, it was also known as International Modernism or International Style.
The emphasis on volume, asymmetrical compositions, and simple ornamentation became trademarks of the style. The phrase “modern movement” was developed in the United Kingdom to designate the strict modernist designs of the 1930s through the early 1960s. The movement’s founders were Walter Gropius and Le Corbusier, with the latter having a significant influence on the design of numerous public housing schemes in Britain.
