“Architecture must be true to itself, its land, and its people.” This was famously quoted by the late Architect Francisco Mañosa, or Bobby, as often called. He always had the vision of aiming to identify and highlight the architectural design that best represents authentic Filipino culture. But the image of Philippine architecture tends to be described as a style mixed with colonial influences, given the history of the country. Being able to identify the distinctiveness of Filipino architecture and emphasizing more on Filipino features can help separate its own character from these influences. Neo Vernacular Architecture is a way of doing that, in which Bobby Mañosa was a pioneer of.
About Ar. Mañosa
Francisco ‘Bobby’ Mañosa, born in Manila in February 1931, was son of actress Maria Tronqued and sanitary engineer Manuel Mañosa Sr. He studied architecture in University of Santo Tomas and went to Japan after college as told by his father. During the stay, he got inspired by how Japanese architecture showed a consistent design drawn from their own culture, may it be traditional or a much modern take. It made him want to have this kind of style, the same consistency, but with Filipino roots.
He worked in their family architectural firm with his brothers and insisted on taking part in projects which have a Filipino design despite the growing popularity of modernist or international styles at that time. Aside from promoting the use of indigenous materials such as coconut, bamboo, rattan and capiz, he developed a modern architectural style inspired by traditional Filipino dwellings – the bahay kubo and the bahay na bato.
Bobby Mañosa is also a National Artist for Architecture and Allied Arts, awarded last 2018.
