The Shades of Modern Filipino Architecture

The Shades of Modern Filipino Architecture

Exterior Perspective

Filipino Architecture, from nipa huts made out of bamboos and grass to using masonry walls, glass and wood panels. Now, Modern Filipino Architecture is being used in the Philippines and has proved to be a sustainable architectural style as it uses construction materials that does not produce much carbon footprint. It is also long lasting and durable even when calamity hits, since Philippines is a country with tumultuous weather condition. Now, here are some sides in Modern Filipino Architecture that future architects can find useful.

  • Color Scheme

From the natural wood color that almost look orange when it’s basked under the sun to the cream and egg white color mix of the ceramic walls. It shows how history had progressed to the modern times. There’s also the brown tinted frosted glass framed by steel black casements. These colors are related to the natural shades and tints that nature produces, thus, giving the old Filipino vibe in a modernized manner.

  • Wood Paneling

Wood paneling is becoming more famous as time goes as it gives of a calm feeling. It gives certain tone inside a room depending on how an interior designer or architect uses it. In this case, the banig designed wood panel by the walls of the accounting office gives off friendly atmosphere. It can keep the patients from feelinh intimidated when they want to ask the receptionist or people by the counter the information they want to know. There are also parts of the ceiling that are wood paneled and have been encased by cream concrete ceiling. This is to make the patients feel relaxed during the wait. As opposed to a normal hospital, this Covid-19 Center focuses on letting the patients feel that they are free to feel chill or calm before the vital checking, since a lot of people tend to get nervous about what the result of their blood pressure would be or will the vaccine be really effective. Sometimes, this type of stress can affect the results of blood pressure when checked. Modern Filipino architecture gives this type of service to user.

  • Wood Panel Partition

In the photo below, wood paneling is used as a room partition. This partition is located in the biotesting room and it has served as a division in the room. It is so that the patients, upon entering the biotesting room, will not feel confused because of the wide space. A big room with one purpose can still look chaotic without proper subdivisions. This hallway is to prevent this kind of problem from occurring, and looking at it, the wood panel from the ceiling and partition had been accented by the cream and black color of the floor. When the sun shines through the glass panels, the wood partition is given more depth and this small part of the room definitely sets another mood, like a sense of relief after going through a hard day’s job or in this case, after the patient’s nervous trial of getting their mouth and nose poked by a complete stranger.

  • Raw Materials Patterned Pavements

Patterned pavements are part of Philippine Architecture History but the usage of terra cota as construction materials is a method that came from the Spaniards. With this mixture of idea, geometric patterns become more alive when the color of the terra cota blends with the other materials. While the pedestrian pathway garners the attention, the exterior walls that has been based off of Ivatan houses’ exterior walls but only darker as it gives a more sophisticated modernized vibe helps with emphasizing the aforementioned feature. On the second floor, ceramic cream tiles is used while the landscape outside has wood finishing, this idea also came from Filipino traditional houses where masonry walls are used in the first floor and lighter materials on the 2nd floor.
