Modernism is a global architecture and design movement that emerged in the 1920s as a response to accelerated industrialization and social changes. Pursuing order and universals in architecture, modernism utilized new materials and advanced technology and rejected old, traditional, historical ideas and styles, and ornamentation. Modernism emphasized function, simplicity, and rationality, and created new forms of expression with a new aesthetic.
This new aesthetic resulted in modern buildings characterized by clean lines, simple geometric shapes, pure cubic forms, ribbon windows, flat roofs, and functional, flexible open interior spaces with plain exposed structures that were considered appropriate for all nations and cultures.
Characteristics of Mid-Century Modern:
- Emphasis on honesty of materials: To express its inherent character, wood is frequently dyed rather than painted. Exterior wood is frequently stained in order to bring out the grain and character of the wood.
- Emphasis on open, flowing interior spaces: Walls, doors, and hallways no longer define living areas. Living, dining, and kitchen areas often flow together as one continuous interior space, indicating a more casual and laid-back lifestyle.
- Emphasis of rectangular forms and horizontal and vertical lines: House shapes are either based boxes or linked boxes. For dramatic effect, materials are frequently used in well-defined planes and vertical forms juxtaposed against horizontal elements.
- Lack of ornament: Decorative moldings and intricate trim are removed or considerably simplified, resulting in a clean aesthetic in which materials are joined in simple, well-executed joints.
- Low, horizontal massing, flat roofs, emphasis on horizontal planes and broad roof overhangs: Because modern homes are built on large lots, many, but not all, must have meandering one-story designs. Many examples hug the ground and appear to be part of the site rather than in opposition to it.
- Relationship between interior spaces and sites: The use of enormous expanses of glass effectively incorporates the building’s site inside the building, allowing stunning views and natural landscaping to be taken advantage of.
- Use of modern materials and systems: Steel columns are exposed, concrete block is employed as a finishing material, concrete floors are stained and exposed, long-span steel trusses allow for open column-free rooms, and radiant heating systems improve human comfort.
- Use of traditional materials in new ways: Wood, brick, and stone are employed in a minimalistic manner to portray a modern look. Simple vertical board cladding is used in vast, smooth planes to replace traditional clapboard siding. Simple, unadorned brick and stonework is used in rectilinear masses and planes.
