What it Means to be an Architect

What it Means to be an Architect

From the largest structures we see, such as the towering skyscrapers, massive airports, grand hotels, luxurious resorts, vast complexes, to the smallest structures, such as residentials and small-scaled commercial buildings, it all comes down to one or a group of professional designers, including urban planning and other associated services. We refer to them as architects.

They are in charge of designing the structures stated above, as well as anything else related to architecture. With proper planning and aesthetically pleasing structures, they create the world a better and more beautiful place.

But what distinguishes architects as “architects”? It’s not inevitable that someone unfamiliar with the area of architecture often stereotypes these professionals as designers who only produce nothing but mere sketches.

The three (3) main steps to become an architect are as follows. Note that this is what we have in the Philippines, but it may differ in some ways from what we have in other countries, or it may be the same:

1. 5-year Degree Program

The Bachelor of Science in Architecture is a 5-year degree program that Colleges and Universities offer here in the country. All aspects of architecture, including the fundamentals and technical skills and knowledge required in real-world construction, are taught here.

2.              2 Years of Diversified Architecture Experience

Following graduation, you must complete at least two (2) years of diversified training. You can only take the board examination if you’ve completed those criteria.

3.              Architecture Licensure Exam

The architectural board test is also known as the ALE, or Architecture Licensure Exam. The test is usually held in the months of January and June in the Philippines, and it is supervised by the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC). After qualifying the board examination, only then, you will be deemed as a registered architect.

Knowing all of this will give you an idea of what to expect if you decide to pursue a career in architecture. This also demonstrates that architects are professionals who generate more than just sketches.

You’re not just paying for drawings when you hire an architect; you’re also paying for the years they spent on education, training, and experience to master their craft. Architects are professionals who design in a legal manner for your safety and property.

For building your dream house, an architect can help you make it into reality!
