The word “Craftsman” stems from the name of a prominent magazine published from 1901 to 1916 by furniture designer Gustav Stickley. Stickley was a key proponent of the Arts and Crafts movement, which espoused the benefits of handicraft and simple, folksy design in opposition to the rise of industrial mass manufacturing.
Bungalows, the most house type for dwellings in the American Craftsman style, matched the Arts and Crafts movement and were created with the working class in mind, requiring less materials and effort to construct. Craftsman houses are relatively smaller, easy to maintain, have little wasted space, and may easily be customized to the owner’s preferences.
Craftsman architecture, in general, embraced nature and organic forms. Horizontal lines and low gabled roofs allowed homes to blend in rather than stand out against the landscape. Porches and wide windows were constructed to make outside life more enjoyable.
Overall, American Craftsman style are compact, intimate residences that never goes out of style.
